9 Amazing Southern Utah Charities - Can You Volunteer or Donate?

St. George, Utah is full of opportunities because of the beautiful area and high quality resources. Unfortunately, there are some individuals and families that can’t afford those same opportunities. There are so many living in poverty that rely on donations from community members like you to keep them fed, housed, and safe. There are plenty of charities to give to in the area to help support the individuals and families that need your kind donations.

Habitat for Humanity

Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has been committed to provide safe and affordable housing for lower income families using your donations. Located on Bluff Street in St. George is a Habitat for Humanity Restore. This donation center offers lightly used and cheap home improvement items including furniture, appliances, houseware, hardware, and more. Families all over the community are able to get their needs met with a fraction of the regular retail price, all thanks to your generous donations!

Big Brothers Big Sisters

For over 40 years, this home mentoring organization gives youth in the community the opportunity to be mentored one on one. Studies have shown that children and youth who are mentored have better grades in school, feel more confident, and have a greater potential. This program benefited almost 1,000 kids in Utah in 2021. You can be the next volunteer to have an impact on the youth in the community by donating your time, donating financially, or donating used clothes. Make a difference in the community by supporting the potential of the youth at Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Children of Hope Academy

The Children of Hope Academy is a school that assists children with special needs in their education journey. It’s an inclusive place to create more hope and possibilities for children. You can help out this non-profit organization by donating or participating in monthly, biannual, and annual fundraisers to support the students. The students benefit so much and thrive from the support of their tutors. You can contribute by becoming a volunteer or tutor. Like Children of Hope Academy’s motto says, “Lend a hand to those who need it!”

Switchpoint Community Resource Center

Since 2014, Switchpoint has been supporting those experiencing homelessness by providing them with shelter and other resources. This shelter has helped many in the community get back on their feet and take a step in the direction to independence. Switchpoint offers an on-site soup kitchen and food pantry where you can volunteer and feed children and adults in need. You can also help those at Switchpoint by becoming a monthly donor, participating in donation drives, or volunteering to help with the various jobs and operations including the food pantry, laundry, thrift store, cleaning, gardening, and much more. Tan's Treats

1 in 7 children in Utah experience food insecurity meaning they do not know when they will get their next meal. Tan’s Treats is dedicated to feeding and helping children in need in the Southern Utah community. Not only do they help children, but they educate those in the community on the seriousness of child hunger and how community members can assist. Tan’s Treats organizes food drives where you can donate food as well as money. You can also donate your time by volunteering to bag and package food. There are so many ways to support children in the community and Tan’s Treats is a great place to start.

Dove Center

Dove Center in St. George is committed to ensuring that survivors of domestic abuse, sexual assault, trafficking, and stalking have a place to receive help, shelter, and counseling. Dove Center provides advocacy and safety for victims in these situations. There are a number of ways for community members to volunteer. You can help by participating in community-based events to spread awareness, answering phones, greeting clients, assisting staff, and if you are properly trained you can become a hospital advocate and work one-on-one to support clients in the hospital. Do your part to help create more safety and more resources for survivors at Dove Center.

Family Support Center of Southern Utah

This Support Center has the goal to strengthen and support families and relationships. With this goal in mind they strive to help families through their services, including parent education, child abuse prevention, youth mentoring, nursery services, and post adoptive support, and more. You can get involved and assist these families by becoming a volunteer, a mentor, or you can simply donate. This center is also in need of disinfecting spray, disinfecting wipes, diapers, and paper goods (towels, plates, toilet paper). You can make a big difference by donating these items and helping in any way you can. Every bit of support from you, a community member, counts!

Self-Help Homes

Self-Help Homes is a tool for those struggling to make ends meet and  those worried about affording a suitable home. Self-Help Homes uses the Mutual Self-Help Housing owner-builder model to help members of the community in constructing their own home as an owner and builder under the supervision of a Self-Help Homes construction supervisor. This organization has assisted families by building over 578 homes all over Utah. If you’re wondering how you can help these families build their futures, you can volunteer to work alongside these families by helping them build their homes. Your willingness to help provide homes for others in the community is greatly appreciated!

 

In an imperfect world, there will always be people in need and people who could use some love and support.
