Sky Mountain Golf Course
The Sky Mountain Golf Course opened its first nine in December of 1994 and the second nine a few months later in 1995. This course quickly became known for its beauty as well as for its hearty challenge. Course designer Jeff Hardin is no stranger to mountain and desert terrain. Having several highly rated courses in Tucson and other Arizona locales to his credit, Hardin was able to achieve a course layout with the strategic use of the natural desert terrain. Lava rock, sage brush, and sand provide out-of-bounds for some holes while thousand foot cliffsides do the job for others. Errant shots are not easily recovered on any hole.
Set amidst spectacular beauty left behind by a violent volcanic history, the wildly varying scenery is difficult for many to describe. Course regular Jack Thomas sums it up as “a kaleidoscope of eye-popping art.”
The Virgin River cut a fifteen hundred foot gorge along the northern edge of the course which adds another amazing layer of views to the already rich mix. Golfers find scenic features on just about every hole: jagged displays of deeply colored sandstone, streams of black volcanic rock overlaying the countryside, the granite face of Pine Valley Mountain and the occasional thousand foot waterfalls that appear during seasonal melts and following rainstorms.
Under the direction of Superintendent Jeff Beteag since it opening, this course is known for its meticulous care and condition.
